10/19/17 – Students at Challenger Elementary celebrated the grand opening of the school’s new student-run credit union on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The student-run credit union, which is a partnership between Howell Public Schools and LOC Federal Credit Union will be open each Wednesday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. throughout the school year.

Each week, fifth-grade students in the program will work with a representative from LOC Federal Credit Union to accept deposits, process withdraws and open new savings accounts for their classmates and school staff members. The program teaches students about fiscal responsibility and reinforces the math skills learned in class. Additionally, through the program, students learn important work and life skills such as interpersonal communications, resume building and interviewing skills.

“The student-run credit union is a great learning opportunity for our students. It will allow them to apply the skills they are learning in class to a real-world situation,” said David Cherry, Challenger Elementary principal. “I am very thankful to for LOC Federal Credit Union for bringing this program to our school.”

With the opening of the Challenger student-run credit union, all Howell elementary schools now have a student-run credit union or bank.Hutchings, Northwest, Voyager and Three Fires also have student run-credit unions through the district’s partnership with LOC Federal Credit Union. Southwest Elementary students operate a student-run bank through a partnership with First National Bank of Howell.
